Thanksgiving may be right around the corner, but before we dive into all the delicious food and family time, we have an important civic duty to take care of — voting! This year, make sure you’re ready to cast your ballot by or before November 5.

With so much happening in the world right now, your vote is more important than ever. Let’s ensure we have a plan so that nothing stands in the way of making our voices heard. Whether you’re voting early or on Election Day, here’s a checklist to help you prepare and stay comfortable while waiting in line.

Your Election Day Voting Plan

  • Your Vote is PRIVATE
You don’t have to share your vote with anyone. If you’re going with family or friends, feel free to head to the voting booth solo to keep your choices personal.
  • Stay 100 Feet Away from Campaigning
Want to spread the word about your candidate? Awesome! Just make sure you’re doing it from a distance. Polling laws require campaign materials to be handed out at least 100 feet away from the voting location.
  • No Political Paraphernalia
Leave the campaign hats, shirts, and buttons at home. Wearing political gear is prohibited at polling places, so it’s best to go neutral.
  • No Ballot Selfies
While we love a good selfie, taking a picture with your ballot is a no-go — it’s illegal! But don’t worry, you can still capture the moment with a photo of yourself and your “I Voted” sticker outside the polling place.
  • Patience, Patience, Patience
The lines might be long, but don’t let that discourage you! Stay determined. You’re making a difference.
  • No Jokes at Check-In
Keep things smooth at check-in. No need for humor here — just your ID and a smile.
  • Bring Your ID
Double-check your state’s ID requirements and make sure you have the correct form of identification before you leave the house.
  • Plan Ahead
If you’re voting early, check the details for your polling place. Make sure you know exactly where to go and when.
  • Sample Ballot
Print out or complete a sample ballot ahead of time. That way, you’ll be able to vote quickly and confidently!
  • Charge Your Phone
Keep your phone fully charged, and bring along a portable charger to make sure you don’t run out of juice while you wait in line.
  • Stay Hydrated & Energized
Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated, along with some snacks like fruit, crackers, or a protein bar to keep your energy up.
  • Sunglasses & Reading Glasses
The sun might be shining, or your ballot might have tiny text. Be prepared with both sunglasses and reading glasses!
  • Comfortable Shoes
You could be standing for a while, so make sure your footwear is comfy.
  • Consider a Folding Chair
If standing for long periods is hard for you, bring a small folding chair to stay comfortable.
  • Don’t Forget Your Medication
If you take daily medications, bring them along just in case the wait runs longer than expected.
  • Eat Before You Go
Don’t forget to fuel up with a meal before heading out!
  • Take a Good Book
You may need something to help pass the time. A book or some music will keep you entertained.

Show Off That Sticker!

Once you’ve voted, celebrate! Snap a picture with your “I Voted” sticker outside the polling location and share it on social media. Encourage your friends and family to do the same. Let’s create a wave of energy and excitement around voting — every vote counts!

Final Thoughts

This checklist will help you stay comfortable and prepared as you wait to cast your ballot. Voting is a powerful way to make your voice heard, and we need everyone to step up and participate. After voting, I’ll be cozying up with a blanket, watching the election returns, and enjoying some chili. What’s your election night plan?

Let’s make it happen — go vote and encourage others to do the same! 🇺🇸
