Are you eager to make a difference but unsure where to begin? Always remember to do your due diligence before donating to any political campaign or nonprofit organization. It’s not just about handing over cash; it’s about understanding your impact and ensuring your money makes a real difference!

Here’s the truth: Every campaign and nonprofit organization must raise funds to effectively survive. Campaigns need funds to pay their staff, for training modules, travel, marketing, offices, and more. Nonprofit organizations need funds to run their operations, cover staff salaries, implement programs, and more.

Over the past week, after the change of frontrunner on the Democratic ticket, many individuals have approached me, ready to contribute to their chosen political campaigns. However, they often wonder which sites are the best for donations and how to effectively vet these organizations.

When it comes to political campaigns, you will likely find an influx of emails, text messages, and mailers arriving in your inbox. Campaigns and organizations are asking for funds as an opportunity to engage individuals in becoming partners in achieving the campaign’s compelling vision. It is true. People love to be asked to be part of something bigger than themselves. Fundraising is an opportunity to ask people to be partners in achieving the end goal. This is where you come in as a partner to a campaign or to join alongside of a nonprofit organization.

Political events online or in-person are often where you find activists raising funds; however, be aware of those who are fraudulent fundraisers. This is why it is important to do your due diligence.

In today’s world of AI, scams, and hackers cloning social media accounts, it’s easy to donate without proper due diligence. To help you ensure your hard-earned money is well-spent, here are some ways to vet political campaigns and nonprofits before making a donation:

1. Ask, Why This Campaign: Know your why. Why do you want to give to this campaign? Where are the funds being utilized? What percentage is being used for travel, training, marketing, etc.?

2. Know the Rules and Contribution Limits: Under the Federal Election Campaign Act (the Act), contributions are subject to limits. Learn more by visiting [https://www.fec.gov/help-candidates-and-committees/candidate-taking-receipts/contribution-limits/]

3. Research the Campaign and/or the Organization’s Background: Check the organization’s history, mission, and board of directors along with the executive team. Look for reviews and ratings on platforms like Charity Navigator, GuideStar, or the Better Business Bureau.

4. Verify the Organization’s Financials: Ensure the organization is registered and in good standing. For political campaigns, check with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) to confirm their legitimacy. AND…

5. Analyze Financial Transparency: When considering donating to a nonprofit, review the organization’s financial reports and disclosures. Reputable nonprofits should have their financial information publicly available, showing how funds are allocated and spent.

6. Research Endorsements and Partnerships: Investigate and connect the dots for endorsements from reputable sources and partnerships with well-known organizations. Identify indicators of credibility and trustworthiness. Ask who has endorsed this political candidate or nonprofit.

7. Measure Their Impact: Assess the organization’s impact by looking at their achievements and measurable outcomes. Success stories, case studies, and annual reports can provide insight into their effectiveness.

8. Read Reviews and Testimonials: In looking for nonprofit organization to align with, seek out reviews and testimonials from donors, volunteers, and beneficiaries. Personal experiences can offer valuable perspectives on the organization’s work and integrity.

9. Use Caution: Watch out for red flags such as high-pressure donation tactics, lack of transparency, or any signs of financial mismanagement.

If you do not have the capacity or bandwidth to do this sort of vetting, make your donations directly to the national website of your political party of choice, such as the national website for the presidential campaign, senator, or house of representatives.

By following these steps, you can make informed decisions and ensure that your donations are making a genuine impact. Stay tuned and follow me for more tips and insights on charity, volunteerism, and political engagement! Let’s navigate this journey together!

Oh, before I end this article, I recommend setting up a separate email account just for campaign donations. This way, you can check it at your leisure, as the emails from now until the election will be never-ending. You can thank me later.
